Preparing Your Feet For Summer

May 30, 2024

The arrival of warmer weather signals a change in our wardrobe, and that includes our footwear. As we prepare to shed those heavy socks and boots, our podiatrist at Kirkland Office reminds our patients to take the proper steps to keep our feet happy all spring and summer.

  • Over the winter our skin tends to become dry, and our feet are certainly no exception! Before breaking out those sandals, take some time to soak your feet and gently exfoliate dead skin cells. This remedy successfully treats dry, cracked heels.
  • Get into the daily habit of applying a moisturizer on those heels and other areas of the feet and toes that have been hiding under your winter footwear. This will soften your skin and give it a healthy appearance.
  • It’s time to make the switch to shoes made from breathable materials like leather or mesh to allow for better air circulation. This not only provides greater comfort, but also prevents moisture from building up and minimizes the risk of fungal infections like athlete’s foot.
  • If sandals are your preferred choice of footwear, be sure to choose brands that provide solid arch support and fit securely. Flip-flops may be cool at the pool, but are a no-no for everyday use.
  • When applying sunscreen during summer months, don’t forget your feet! The tops of our feet are vulnerable to sunburn, so it’s advisable to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher if your feet are exposed while spending an extended period outdoors — especially at the beach!

The podiatrist at Kirkland Office is the most qualified medical expert when it comes to the overall health of our feet, which we rely on to carry us as we take thousands of steps each day.
