Soccer: Popular But Punishing on The Feet and Ankles

November 29, 2023

Soccer, the game known just about everywhere else around the globe as football (or futbol), is gaining more and more popularity in the U.S. A variety of factors, including greater cultural diversity, more streaming coverage of international matches, and the success of the U.S. teams, have all driven a spike in popularity among youth and adults. But as our doctor of podiatric medicine at Kirkland Office can attest, soccer can be brutal on the feet and ankles.

Players often run anywhere between three and seven or more miles during a match, and all that running, cutting side to side, sliding, tackling and striking the ball or another player with the feet can lead to injuries.

Here are some of the more common injuries associated with the sport:

  • Fractures of the ankle, the long metatarsal bones under the foot that lead to the toes, and fractures to the joint connecting the metatarsals with the bones in the arch (known as the Lisfranc joint).
  • Bone bruises and contusions that occur from high impact plays such as slide tackling.
  • Heel pain, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis and stress fractures from overuse and excessive training.
  • Serious sprains that can damage ankle ligaments and can also be associated with fractures and tendon injuries.

To avoid the risk of injury, it is recommended that players consult professionals to make sure they are wearing the proper footwear for ankle support, and cleats or soles specifically designed for the particular playing surface. Taping or bracing the ankle may be indicated for some players. Of course, proper training, preparation and warm-ups before hitting the pitch are absolutely critical.
