Flat feet, which are also referred to as pes planus, is a deformity that occurs when the arch of the foot collapses and comes into complete or near-complete contact with the ground. The condition can be congenital or it can develop over time as a result of age or injury. Although most people with flat feet present few, if any symptoms, those who do often report pain in the midfoot region. This discomfort makes any physical activity difficult and it may be accompanied by swelling along the inner ankle and arch.  If you believe you have flat feet, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our experienced podiatrist. We will conduct a comprehensive review of symptoms, physical examination and perform diagnostic testing as needed to evaluate the structure of your foot. Treatment for flat feet varies in children and adults. In both cases, a conservative approach is typically provided, with surgical intervention reserved for only the most severe of cases. Often, custom fabricated orthotics are recommended for flat feet. Physical therapy involving foot gymnastics may also be beneficial as it involves activities that strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the foot.
